Friday Love Story:Where you least expect it!

I hope my Friday Love Stories have given inspiration!  As I keep working on James and Lily’s new website, I get so excited looking at our new bridal pieces that will be available.  I know each ring will have its day to make someone very happy.  This week’s Friday Love Story is so cute I couldn't wait to share it!
Isabela was taking a routine trip to the dog park with her darling Keanga.  As she was traipsing through the park another dog took notice of Keanga.  The two dogs couldn't stop playing!  Finally the other dog’s owner, Eric, caught up with them and noticed the dogs were having such a good time they probably needed some water.  Well, when Eric asked Isabela if they should take the dogs to the water fountain for a drink, she though he said “would you like to go for a drink”.  Well if he was asking her on a date she said, “I can’t dressed like this”.  Through the miss communication Eric found that well if he asked her out she would wouldn’t turn him down!  With such a cute beginning Eric had to make sure the engagement was just as special.
Halloween was around the corner and all the preparations were in order.  Eric made Isabela’s favorite dinner while they were tending to the trick-or-treaters.  It was Isabela’s turn to answer the door and standing there were a little boy and girl dressed as bride and groom.  The little girl handed Isabela a bouquet of roses and the little boy held out a box.  Eric emerged at her side on bended knee and opened the little box and asked her to marry him!
~Isabela and Eric
Such a cute story!  Could you imagine how cute the two little kids were?!  This is such a special post because this June will be Isabela and Eric’s ten year anniversary!  Congratulations!!!!

The Four C’s of Diamonds

As James and Lily is gearing up for the launch of our new website, we are excited about a new feature that will make a whole variety of diamonds available through our site!  While studying to becoming a graduate gemologist I spent quite a bit of time studying diamonds because there is so much to learn about them.  All these qualities work together to make diamonds sparkle and shine beautifully.  When looking for diamonds they are graded by the four C’s.  I thought I’d give you an explanation of the four C’s to get you ready for James and Lily’s new site!

Cut:  When looking at diamonds we use cut to tell us how well the stone was cut to achieve the most   sparkle and shine.  The way diamonds play with light is so unique we can’t help but love it!   There is a whole science in proportions and percentages that help diamonds graders decide what quality the cut is, but they make it easier by putting diamonds into categories to tell us the quality of the cut.  The categories are: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.  The measurement differences can be so minuscule between an Excellent graded stone and a Very Good.  Sometimes if you compare two stones visually, one Excellent, and another Very Good, many people will choose a Very Good not knowing the two stone’s grades, because the way a diamond looks is a combination of the four C’s.  If you compare an Excellent stone to a Poor stone, you would probably see the difference.
Color:  The color grade tells us how much color, or lack of color there is in the diamond.  We use a D-Z scale to grade amount of color in a diamond.  Because diamonds form in nature, there can be extra chemicals and minerals that get caught in the formation of the diamond.  This is what causes color in the stone, typically yellow.  Starting at D there is no color, and as you progress down to Z there more color progresses.  D,E,F is often considered colorless.  G,H stones are near colorless.  I,J will begin to have a little color, and as your progress down in the alphabet the more color you will find in the diamond.
Clarity:  Just like with color, because diamonds form in nature, there can be other things that are caught up in the formation or caused during the formation.  If you have looked at diamond grades before you will be familiar with the terms F,IF,VVS1,VVS2 and so on.   These are how we grade the amount of inclusions that can be seen in the stone under 10X magnification.  It is important to remember that clarity grading is done under magnification. Inclusions are things that can get caught in the stone or are created during the formation of the diamond.  One example could be a crystal.  Another example would be what we call a pin point, a small speck within the stone.  The grade is not only based on what is in the stone but the location as well.  Often the closer the inclusion or inclusions are to the center of the diamond or to the top of the diamond the lower the grade, because it is more likely to be visible.
F, IF: Flawless and internally flawless
VVS1, VVS2:  Very very slight inclusions
VS1,VS2: Very slight inclusions
SI1,SI2: Slight inclusions
I1: Included.  These will sometimes have inclusions that can be seen without magnification or the amount of inclusions will earn a stone an I grading.
Carat:  The size of a diamond is based on Carat Weight.   Carat weight is factored in the stone’s value because the larger the diamond the more rare it is to find in nature.  Two stone with the same carat weight can be worth  different values because of the rest of the Cs’: Cut, Color, Clarity.

The four C’s can help a stone buyer understand the value of the stones they are looking at.  Choosing a stone is such a personal decision because of the range and different combination of the four C’s.   That is what makes your diamond so special!

Friday Love Story, Not according to Plan

The sun will not stop shining! Hopefully this amazing weather will keep going through this weekend, so I can get out and enjoy it.  I have another proposal story to share before the weekend starts.  It is such a great example that no matter how much you plan, sometimes things will not go accordingly…. But  it will be just as romantic!

I met Nyle while getting ready to have my appendix removed.  With all the hustle and bustle that goes on in an Emergency room I noticed his kind eyes and beautiful smile.  My brother in law worked with him and I insisted that he set us up.  Thank goodness he did!   As avid travelers, Nyle and I take every opportunity to pack our bags and head out.  We headed to Tulum to get some sunshine and good food.  Two days before our vacation was over we had an amazing dinner and stuffed ourselves!  Nyle kept trying to get me to go for a walk on the beach but I was insistent that I needed to lie down and wait out the overstuffed feeling.  Well… I was ruining his plan to propose, but I didn’t know!   No cute long walk on the beach under the moonlight!  He was determined to arrived back home engaged so he proposed while I was lying sick in bed.  It was the best cure for my stomachache!  I was just like how we had first met!   Even though I ruined his plans it was just as romantic with every word he spoke.  We were married September 5th at a beautiful Chateau in the Loire Valley, France.
~Cristina
Cristina’s proposal story is a story that makes me laugh.  Her story proves that even though Nyle’s grand plan was altered, it was still such a special and romantic moment for the two of them!

Friday Love Story, Falling in Love...literally

Nothing makes me more excited then a Friday afternoon AND a Friday Love Story! What better way to slip into the weekend with a smile on your face..right?! Thank you to the beautiful Lindsey for sharing her sweet story of "Falling" for her Husband Jason.

Happy Friday & Enjoy!
xo,Kelly

Jason and I first met in college The first week of college to be exact. We spotted each other in our first class, World History, M/W at 9:30. He answered some question about the bible and my ears perked up. I looked over my shoulder, real cool like and locked eyes with him. He smiled. I turned around quickly. Later that day, I walked into my Freshman Psychology class and time stopped and there he was...again. Fate stepped in and somehow the only seat left in  class was right in front of him. We didn't talk the entire class but when class was over we managed to walk to the parking lot side by side. We kept looking at each other like we were going to say hello but the words didn't come out. We were rapidly approaching the staircase when it happened. I tripped and fell. Humiliated, embarrassed, I managed to look up at him with his hand extended, "Are you alright? I'm Jason by the way." I was smitten.

Fast forward seven years and the night of my 26th birthday. Jason planned a fun birthday celebration for me including dinner at one of our favorite spots. First he wanted to take a trip to our college to take some pictures on his new SLR camera. Photography had become a hobby of his so I didn't think anything of it. We made the drive and Jason set up his tripod and got the camera ready. I was fixing my hair for the picture when all of a sudden Jason ran up to me and grabbed me. I was completely caught off guard and the biggest smile came over his face. He said, "Lindsey I have waited my entire life to ask you this question. I can't think of anyone I would rather spend the rest of my life with. I have loved you since the day I met you and need to ask, will you marry me?"

Tears streamed down my face as I exclaimed, "Yes!" We were both so full of pure joy when had almost forgotten about the camera. We were able to capture one of the best moments of our lives on camera and have treasured the photo ever since. To celebrate, Jason had arranged for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate with our family. We got married on December 17, 2010 and couldn't be happier!

And they lived happily ever after :)

Friday Love Story, Journey to the Moment

For some couples the engagement is just down the road.  Both parties know that they are getting married, and the only thing left is the proposal.  Just because the bride to be knows the moment is coming does not mean the element of surprise is completely lost!

Curtis and Vanessa started dating on December 28, 2008.  Four years and one day later, Curtis asked a very important question, and Vanessa said yes! (Well, she didn’t actually say anything but we’ll get to that later…)

If you know Curtis, you know he’s not one for planning.  If you know Vanessa, you know she can’t function without a plan.  Yet on the day of their engagement Curtis planned every special detail while Vanessa just went with the flow.  It truly was an amazing day!
Friday, December 28, 2012 was the couple’s four year anniversary but they decided to celebrate on the 29th so they could have the entire day at their disposal rather than just going to dinner after work on Friday.  Their plan was to go out for breakfast and dinner and do nothing in between.  On the morning of the 29th Curtis suggested they go to Anita’s Crepes for breakfast, but Vanessa insisted on going to one of their favorite restaurants, Volterra, instead.  After a delicious meal, they walked out of the restaurant and Vanessa asked what they should do next.  Curtis reached into his pocket and pulled out an envelope with #1 written on the front.  Vanessa immediately knew this was it – they were finally getting engaged.  She didn’t share her suspicions with Curtis and he was thankful for that!
The envelope contained a card that was the first in a series of clues.  It directed Vanessa to Miro Tea (which is next door to Volterra, which is why Curtis didn’t want to go there for breakfast).  Miro was the first place the two had hung out as friends , and they’d been back many times to play games and study for the bar.  They consider it “their place.”  They went into Miro, played a game, and drank some tea.   When they were finished, Curtis handed Vanessa card #2.
The second card gave the option to “choose your own adventure” – go to the Ballard Locks, where they often take evening walks, or to Golden Gardens, where they have spent many sunny days reading and walking on the beach.  Vanessa chose Golden Gardens, but it was cold so they stopped at home first to get some tea and hot chocolate.  After walking around the beach and reminiscing about some of their favorite memories, Curtis handed Vanessa card #3.
The third card brought them back to “where it all began” – Seattle University School of Law.  Unfortunately it was Christmas break so the doors were locked, but they walked around and went to the Starbucks across the street for yet more tea and coffee and exchanged “remember when” stories from law school.  Curtis then gave Vanessa card #4.
The fourth card sent Vanessa to a local bar where she had thrown Curtis a birthday party a few years earlier.  They had a beer, played shuffle board (Curtis won) and PacMan (If it had been a two person game Curtis would have won that too!), and just enjoyed spending time together until it was time for card #5.
The fifth card did not recreate an old memory but rather made a new one.  They rode the Great Wheel!  About halfway through the very long line, one of the workers asked if there were any groups of 2.  Curtis raised his hand (good thing he’s tall!) and they were pulled up to the front of the line and given their very own car!  Although the weather hadn’t been great that day, the view was spectacular and they were both impressed.  As they stepped off the wheel, Curtis handed over card #6.
The sixth card said they should get to know the city in which they would be growing old together.  Off to Kerry Park!  Vanessa insisted they have a stranger take their picture because of the pretty view.  After the picture they stood together looking out at the beautiful Seattle skyline.  Curtis told Vanessa he loved her, and Vanessa said she loved him too.  He then said, “I have a question for you,” got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him.  Instead of saying yes, Vanessa started shaking and made a bunch of weird noises.  He then put the ring on her finger (the ring they had designed over a year before!) and said their friends, Jared and Micol, were there taking pictures.  Suddenly Micol and Jared popped out from behind an umbrella positioned across the street and Micol came running toward them.  Jared asked if Vanessa said yes, and that’s when they realized she hadn’t….so then she did!  At this point Vanessa hadn’t cried yet (if you know her, you know that was very strange) but suddenly the tears started coming and wouldn’t stop.  They were actually getting married!  Jared then took pictures of the newly engaged couple with their city in the background.  It was truly the best proposal ever—but it wasn’t over yet.  Curtis handed Vanessa the final envelope.
The seventh card confirmed their original dinner plans were still on but added that their moms and step Dads would be joining them  This of course made Vanessa cry even more.  At dinner, there were champagne toasts, happy tears, and so much love.
~Vanessa

As Curtis proved, it doesn’t need to be just the moment by , creating a day full of surprises.  I love that even after the proposal there was one more surprise, and they got to share the adventure over champagne! This story was even more special for James & Lily because we manufactured the gorgeous engagement ring designed by Cristina Podlusky.

"Sharing the love" Megan & Matt's Proposal story

Who doesn't love a great proposal story?!  One of my favorite parts of being a jewelry designer is being a part of such a momentous time in a couple’s relationship.   From helping create the ring to the moment unfolding, each couple creates such a unique story.   To celebrate Friday, and hopefully provide some inspiration, we are so excited to have Megan and Matt share their story.

It was thanksgiving and my family, boyfriend and I were all holding hands saying grace before we ate dinner. We each went around the circle saying what we were thankful for. My boyfriend was the last to say what he was thankful for and he said "I'm thankful for friends and family. I'm thankful for this family and I hope to one day be a part of it. I was actually hoping that day would be today!" He then turned to me, dropped down to one knee, pulled out the beautiful ring and asked "Megan will you marry me?"  I was so excited I don't think I ever answered him! We were married February 15, 2013!
~Megan

Thank you Megan and Matt for the photo and wonderful story!
